#CiteASista™ began as an actionary (reaction and action-based) response to all that co-founders Brittany Williams & Joan Collier learned & discussed on whiteness and white supremacy in their doctoral program. #CiteASista™ was launched as a once monthly twitter chat that serves as a space to uplift and center the voices and contributions of Black women in the U.S.A. & abroad. The project came to fruition as part of a course assignment for a summer class on Whiteness and White Privilege in higher education taught by Dr. Chris Linder and was inspired by AERA’s 2016 panel on Black Women and Girls where the poignant question was asked: Did you cite a Black woman today? #CiteASista™ provides space to give credit and thanks for all of the often used but rarely credited hard work by Black women and discusses ways to support and uplift of Black women in daily life. With the Cite A Sista™ website, we make connections between a larger movement to center Black women and Black womanhood with a wide array of issues!
As co-founders of the #CiteASista™ project, we recognize the placement of this movement as part of a long lineage of Black women supporting Black women– a form of Community Cultural Wealth (Yosso, 2005). Accordingly, we view #CiteASista™ and CiteASista.com™ as spaces to provide encouragement for Black women to not only name the ways we actively resist against silencing of our bodies and voices, but to also show what we can do after naming these experiences (y Muhs, Niemann, González, & Harris, 2012). For these reasons and more, Cite A Sista™ functions not only as a digital counterspace, but as a lifestyle and movement. This website serves as a home to bring together seemingly disparate functions of the project from writing and advice to gear and twitter chats.
